DESCRIPTION:<p dir="ltr">The FIW Research Centre International Economics and its partne
rs kindly invite you to participate in the upcoming Vienna International Ec
onomics Seminar (VIES) on the topic: "The Incidence of Distortions"\, with
Baptiste Bernadac\, Dave Donaldson\, Tishara Garg and Federico Huneeus. Abs
tract: Economic distortions—such as market power\, taxes\, credit constr
aints\, etc.— are fundamental in understanding income differences across
countries. Recent work has documented the pervasive extent of economic dist
ortions and how they lead to substantial aggregate productivity loss. Far l
ess well understood is how these phenomena affect members of society differ
ently. In this paper we combine unique datasets from Chile\, linking worker
s and owners to firms\, firms to each other\, firms to consumers\, and firm
s and consumers to the government\, in order to quantify the incidence of d
istortions for the first time. Speaker: David Atkin is a Professor in the E
conomics Department at MIT. His research focuses on evaluating the impacts
of trade liberalization on the poor in the developing world. His recent wor
k has studied the impacts of trade on health and education\, the costs of d
istance and the distribution sector in developing countries\, and provided
experimental evidence for the impacts of trade and industrial policy. Atkin
holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Princeton University.   When: Tuesday\, M
 ay 19\, 17.45-19.15 p.m. Where: lecture hall 15\, 2nd floor Oskar-Morgenste
 rn-Platz 1\, 1090 Wien The main entrance at Oskar-Morgenstern-Platz 1 is th
e easiest way to get to lecture hall 15\, 2nd floor.     Registration: Pa
rticipants are requested to register in advance with Julia Hnidek (julia.hn
