 MY \n\nSeventy-five years ago\, on 30 October 1947\, 23 countries signed th
 e Final Act of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Devised a
 s a temporary agreement that would boost international trade\, the GATT reg
 ulated world trade for almost 50 years before being succeeded by the World 
 Trade Organization in 1995. However\, the GATT still exists as the WTO's um
 brella treaty for trade in goods    \n\nFIW-Trade Talks is a series of onli
 ne-events organized by the Research Centre International Economics (FIW). I
 nternational economic researchers or high-ranking policy makers are being i
 nterviewed on current topics in international economics and economic policy
 . \n\n  \n\nDouglas A. Irwin    \n\nDouglas Irwin is John French Professor
  of Economics at Dartmouth College. He is the author of Clashing over Comme
 rce: A History of U.S. Trade Policy (University of Chicago Press\, 2017)\, 
 which The Economist and Foreign Affairs selected as one of their Best Books
  of the Year. He is president-elect of the Economic History Association (20
 22-23).   \n\nHe is the author of Free Trade Under Fire (Princeton Universi
 ty Press\, fifth edition 2020)\, Trade Policy Disaster: Lessons from the 19
 30s (MIT Press\, 2012)\, The Genesis of the GATT (Cambridge University Pres
 s\, 2008\, co-authored with Petros Mavroidis and Alan Sykes) and many artic
 les on trade policy and economic history in books and professional journals
 .   \n\nHe is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Resea
 rch and a non-resident Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for Internat
 ional Economics. He worked on trade policy issues while on the staff of Pre
 sident Ronald Reagan's Council of Economic Advisers and later worked in the
  International Finance Division at the Board of Governors of the Federal Re
 serve System in Washington\, D.C. Before joining Dartmouth\, Irwin taught a
 t the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business.   \n\n  \n\nHarald
  Oberhofer   \n\nHarald Oberhofer is a Senior Economist at WIFO\, the Austr
 ian Institute of Economic Research. He is Professor of Economics at the Vie
 nna University of Economics and Business. His research interests include In
 ternational Economics\, empirical Industrial Organisation and Applied Econo
 metrics. Harald Oberhofer studied at the University of Innsbruck and holds 
 a doctorate in Economics and Social Sciences from the University of Innsbru
 ck.   \n\nHarald Oberhofer regularly serves as a consultant to internationa
 l organisations such as the OECD and the World Bank\, where he analyses the
  impact of institutional regulations on firm performance\, also over the bu
 siness cycle.
