 _t8AMg Abstract: Over the past 30 years\, horizontal industrial policy was 
 a no-go in the European Union. However\, with the outbreak of Covid-19\, th
 is has changed. The EU has introduced several policy initiatives in recent 
 years that focus on specific industries or technologies. This presentation 
 provides an overview of these initiatives\, and discusses their origins\, r
 ationales\, and common characteristics. Furthermore\, it raises the questio
 n of whether these initiatives will prove to be successful or not. The semi
 nar series is organised by the Vienna Institute for International Economic 
 Studies (wiiw) in co-operation with FIW\, the Centre of Competence in Inter
 national Economics. The seminar provides a forum for presentation and discu
 ssion of recent academic research in the field of international economics.
